Ulevovaci Chaloupka (Czech Vent) 2005

Video Installation, 8 minutes 54 seconds

This film was made during a residency in the Czech Republic during July and August 2005.   It consists of interviews made by the artist and her interpreter asking members of the public questions.

The Czech Republic appealed to the artist, as it is a more transitional society, both ideologically and economically in the current climate of change in the eastern half of European. Based on the research the artist made, the diversities between the general public in the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic were a major influence upon the venting project undertaken during the residency. The artist became jealous of the heartfelt sincerity she received when approaching strangers in Czech Republic with the question, ÔWhat do you do when you get angry?' The same question asked in various areas of the UK was met with people running in opposite directions, or the comment 'I don't get angry.'

The film shows people either talking about, or in some cases acting out their raw negative emotions.   A woman in front of her husband admitting to smashing their laptop. A young boy considered being from the wrong side of the tracks, raps to hip-hop beats, the incentive behind his rhymes being that like his idol Eminem he can also escape this life for one of fame and fortune.

Ulevovac’ Chaloupka installation consisted of a small room, a re-make of an installation made in the Czech Republic.   Melody offered a private space (for the more inhibited among us) to respond, by writing on the wall, the method in which we vent our anger. The film made in the Czech Republic could be watched as well as being able to read other peoples responses.
