Faraway Voice (2006)

Performance, All day
"On the 23rd of September, 2 lovers share a fish picnic in Penzance after just arriving on holiday from the East. Their lunch is ruined, as they are blind folded and piled into the back of two vehicles. They are driven miles apart and kicked out in the middle of nowhere. They take off their blindfolds and look around the unfamiliar territory. By their feet are packs that contain a map and a phone. The phone rings the voice on the end says 'you are being used in a cruel experiment, where it is up to the consciences of the public to reunite you both, listen out for further instruction.'
Somewhere there is a base, where people are deciding the lover's fate. They have 4 hours to find each other before the batteries on the phones run out. The public know where the lovers are and can track them on the base's ordinance survey map. The public navigate the couple like chess pieces in a human game; it is up to you to tell the truth or lie."
For Tract Live Art Programme, Penzance I produced the conscience testing 'Faraway Voice.' It was my role as the kidnapper at HQ to create a relationship with the public to make them believe that this was a real event, and present them with the opportunity to play with people's lives.
